Weight concerns are plaguing the United States. Millions of Americans are overweight, and because of this the rates of serious diseases like diabetes, hypertension and heart disease are soaring. The low weight is also a concern for thousands of men and women who go to extreme measures to make their bodies as unrealistic ideal. These extreme measures are degrading their health, increasing the chances of the various types of cancer, organ failure and even death. With the severity of the health risks that are associated with weight problems, it is obvious to take control of your weight is vital to maintaining your health, improve the quality of life, and even expanding the duration of his life. While it is clear that taking control of your weight is important, is unfortunately very difficult for some people to do. In order to overcome the difficulties that are related to weight control a weight control health care consultant may be needed. What to Look for in a Weight Management Consultant Health Care First you have to look for in a weight management consultant health care they are well informed about options for healthy weight management. There are many scams weight loss in the market ranging from restrictions on unhealthy calories and food groups, for the exclusive use untested drugs and stimulants to reduce the weight of a person. If you are looking to improve your health, you have to find a consultant who will be able to modify your diet and exercise levels of something that is healthier, and will be able to produce real and lasting results for you. This means you have to have an understanding of nutrition, biology and physiology. The second thing you have to look for in a weight management consultant health care is a personality compatible. If you are a shy person and I do not like confrontation after hiring a weight control health care consultant who is very aggressive and military in nature can not be your best option. In fact, hiring a consultant with incompatible personalities can work to undermine their progress, and can reduce your chances of success. Finally, I want to find an advisor for weight control health care that can develop a program that provides the level of control and support they need to succeed in your weight loss or weight gain mission. This means that if you have problems with strength of will, or do not have the culinary skills to cook their own nutritious meals, to find a consultant who is willing to either teach you how to cook healthier, or they give you with before made food. Weight Management Consultant Health Care Options Find a weight control health care consultant is relatively easy if you know where to look. There are several companies that specialize in weight management consultancy that provide guidance on nutrition and exercise, as well as providing clients with emotional support. These companies include Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig. If you feel comfortable with a group setting for your consulting sessions, then you may want to consider private consultants. You can find this type of consultants in many mid-level to high level of fitness, as well as in the yellow pages under the nutritionist. If these options do not work for you, you can always ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist who can help you reach your ideal weight. Whichever option (s) you choose, make the decision to regain control of your weight is the first step in meeting your goals of weight loss or weight gain.

Helping Collegiate Football Team Drills Forcing the Fumble

The faster your defense is at getting the ball back into the offensive?s hands the more likely you are to win a game. Win your games by training your defense to use a strong tackle that strips the ball from the opponent. This drill practices with two players. Have the defender move up on the offensive player, trust his arms back and then forward with his fists clenched. The defender will practice stripping the ball by bringing his hands up quickly with a clenched fist to grab the opponent and as he does so to aim to knock out the football. Practice these movements slowly to start muscle memory and to correct bad habits.

Proper Catching Leads to Great Ball Security

Catching the football properly and effectively is fundamental to a strong offense. There are three steps of a great catch: First, place your hands in front of you with your palms open and thumbs out forming an open triangle for the football. Second, follow the ball through with your eyes. Third, secure the ball tight and high against your ribs, forearm, and biceps. Many receivers can get into a bad habit of looking away from the ball before it is stored away properly. This increases fumbles and turnovers. To overcome this habit set up a simple drill where two players pass the ball to each other stopping at each critical step: the catch, the follow through, and the tuck.

Low Ball Catching Techniques

Great plays are made through dedicated practice of the fundamentals. Making the plays means that you have practiced the ?non-optimal? situation and know how to react to them. One situation that happens a lot in a game is catching the low passes. One not so perfect scenario is a low passed catch. Here are some basics to a great low catch. First, keep your hands low and lock your pinkies. Locking your pinkies prevents the football from falling through your hands. Third, once the ball touches your hands scoop it up into your chest and tuck it away into a secure position. Use your hands and not your body. Never use your body to catch a football. And always see the ball through, meaning that you are watching it into the tuck.

Practicing the Hand off

Because hand offs are such a vital part of a running offense, running backs should practice hand off skills every day. One great hand off drill starts by having two separate lines of players facing each other: line A and line B. At the coaches signal player A leaves line A running with the football towards line B. At the same time that the first player leaves player B leaves his line towards player A, as they pass each other in the middle player A hands off the football to player B. Now player B has the ball and will hand off the ball to the next person in Line A who will hand off to the next player in Line B. The motion should be constantly moving from one line to another in this drill, almost like a juggling pattern. It is an effective drill to teach handoff skills and help running backs achieve higher accuracy and consistency.

A lot of untapped resources in our great planet. These reserves are located in pristine places, full of weird and wonderful organisms that we know very little. The world ocean and the tropical rainforests of our world are the limits that come easily to mind. In these places are a high degree of biodiversity, and many of these species have developed non-traditional tactics and techniques to survive in these environments varied. The unusual group of organisms that will be addressed in this document are a genus of marine mollusc, Conus, cone snails. These snails produce a poison that has the potential for wide application in our lives. Cone snail genus comprises more than 500 species, with the type of species that Conus marmoreus, the cone snail marble. Snails are found in tropical waters, and are characterized by a cone-shaped shell, which is considered a valuable find more than a shell collector. Conus species can have 23 cm long and is carnivorous. Because they are generally slow, using a tube called a radula as the harpoon toxoglossan full of venom to catch its prey. This weapon is fired from barbed mouth into the fast-moving prey. When a dam or other fish is beaten, you are paralyzed by the poison and the harpoon is retracted into the mouth with the victim. The strength of the injection of a harpoon is such that has the ability to drill a wetsuit, and the poison can cause death in humans, although this is not always the result of an attack. The poisons found in members of Conus peptides and gender are called conotoxins. The vast majority of them are neurotoxic, which impair the function of receptors of the nerves, causing paralysis followed by death. A large percentage of cone snails also has an element of the poison that reduces the pain of a victim it feels to be beaten by barbed proboscis. Painkiller is in this medical application of this toxin might lie. This is due to factors that the molecule whose activity relieves the pain in these cone snail venom works to prevent the communication of pain signals from nerve cells in the brain by blocking the calcium channels in nerve cells. The properties of these poisons were discovered in the 1960's by Dr. Baldomero Olivera, a pioneer in the field, but the technology needed to use his discovery was not available until much more recently. Medical researchers have long been looking ways to relieve patients' pain during periods of prolonged illness, during surgery, or later during the recovery period, when levels of pain can often be higher. Morphine first commonly used during the Civil War to ease the pain of the wounded soldiers, but doctors have been looking for an alternative to most of the time, citing the fact that it is addictive and can be destructive in large quantities or after long periods of use. Other commonly used analgesics include codeine and aspirin. Codeine is facing the same problem as morphine, as it has an addictive nature and tends to lead to chemical dependency in which you are not careful. Aspirin is a widely prescribed analgesic because of its "effectiveness, but it is a blood thinner and has many potential side effects. The ideal analgesic for researchers not yet arrived, but the discovery of these properties in cone snail venom leads scientists to believe they may have found what they have long been looking for. A painkiller called Prialt, or ziconotide, has been derived from and omega-conotoxin from the venom of Conus by Elan Pharmaceuticals, and was approved by the FDA in December 2004. It is derived from the venom of Conus magus, the magician's cone snail. Prialt is useful in cases where the patient can not tolerate morphine treatment or when the pain is such that a safe dose of morphine is not enough. This medicine is given as an injection directly into the cerebrospinal fluid of the patient. As these analgesics often based poison 1,000 times more powerful than existing resources are used in the treatment of extreme chronic pain, as experienced by cancer patients. (Olivera in the sea snail ") Prialt has also been found in trials that non-addictive in nature, giving it a leg up on most of the pain now for hospitals around the world . Another sea snail hosts a trade potentially useful analgesic is C. victoriae, the cone snail Australia. ACV1 (analgesic component of Venom) has been isolated from the Conus by Professor Bruce Livett and is now in clinical trials of drug metabolism. One of the drawbacks of this exciting new medical frontier is that many of these species are rare and therefore difficult and expensive to obtain and use. It is critical that the populations of these snails is conserved and that the poison is extracted from the least destructive to not endanger these special creatures and the planet's biodiversity is maintained. In addition to snails, corals and sponges have been explored for use in this sense too, but the general consensus is that Conus has a bright future. "These snails are the designers of pharmaceuticals on the nature of drugs. And with Prialt really only touching the tip of the iceberg surface of what they can do. "This quote by Dr. Jon-Paul Bingham told the BBC, embodies the spirit of the scientists working on this new discovery . The applications of poisons over 500 different species, with more than 100 different toxins from venom is potentially enormous. Currently there are drugs in clinical trials for treating Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. With each new discovery that takes place in the future of pain relief becomes more and more encouraging, but I hope that someday we can say that the future of pain is nonexistent.
Back pain affects nearly 80% of Americans and the most common form is Low Back Pain. Because you rely on your back for almost every move you make, it is vulnerable to injury. Back pain can even be disabling. It is one of the most common problems prompting a visit to your doctor and for missing work. In fact, it is the second highest cause of disability in persons under the age of 45.

Although people complain of back pain, it is not a diagnosis but rather a symptom of an underlying disorder. There are two types of back pain, acute and chronic. Acute back pain is pain with a new onset. It comes on suddenly, usually due to injury. This is the most common type of back pain. It is usually resolved in less than one month but no more than 6 weeks duration. Chronic pain is pain that can have a quick or slow onset, but it lingers for long periods of time. Although it may last three months or longer, some people experience a lifetime of chronic back pain. Chronic pain is the least common type of pain.

What Causes Back Pain?

To begin to understand the causes of back pain, we need to understand the spine. The back is made up of 33 vertebrae or bones. It is divided into 5 groups: Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Sacrum and Coccyx. The cervical spine (upper back or neck) consists of 7 vertebrae. The thoracic(middle back) has 12, and the lumbar spine(low back) has 5 vertebrae. The sacrum consists of 5 fused vertebrae, and the coccyx(tail bone) has 4 vertebrae fused together.

The vertebrae are held together by ligaments and muscles with discs between the vertebrae. The discs are filled with a jellylike center, allowing them to act like a shock absorber. The vertebrae link together to provide stability and support. They protect the spinal cord and spinal nerves that run through the spinal canal.

Because the neurological system is complex, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of back pain. The causes of back pain are divided into categories: Mechanical, Injuries, Acquired disorders or diseases, Infections or tumors.

Mechanical causes: These are problems with how the spine works. For example, Spondylolistesis(deterioration of the disc one vertebrae to slip forward over another, causing the vertebrae to rub together, therefore causing pain). Other mechanical problems are fractures, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, spinal degeneration and sciatica.

Injuries- This category includes common forms of back pain due to injury to the spine or the ligaments and muscles involved with the spine. Sprains, for example, result if a ligament that supports the spine is pulled or torn due to improper lifting or body mechanics, even twisting the wrong way, Fractures can occur from osteoarthritis which causes the bones to become brittle and weak. Sever injuries can result from an accident or fall.

Acquired disorders- These are medical problems that you might have been born with such as scoliosis(an abnormal curvature of the spine) to other problems that you acquired, such as arthritis(osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis) which can lead to fractures; musculoskeletal pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia, spinal stenosis (Narrowing of the spinal canal putting pressure on spine or nerves); and even pregnancy.

Infection/Tumors- Infection, although not common, can cause pain if it involves the vertebrae. Two examples of this are Osteomyelitis(infection and inflammation of the vertebrae) and Discitis(infection in the discs).Tumors, although rare, can also cause back pain. These can be benign or cancerous, but usually result from a tumor that has spread from another area of the body.

How is back pain diagnosed?

In order for your physician to discuss the proper treatment for your back pain, he will need to do a thorough medical history and physical exam. You will need to give a clear concise description of your pain. Your physician will need to know how the pain started, what you were doing when it started, how severe it is, does it come and go or is it constant, and what makes the pain better or worse. You will need to undergo some diagnostic tests. Common tests done to diagnose back pain are x-rays, bone scans, and MRI’s. These diagnose problems due to bone or soft tissue injuries. Your doctor may order blood and urine tests to look for infection. If your physician feels the pain might be caused by a nerve problem, then you will have an EMG(electromyography) or nerve study. An EMG is an assessment of the electrical impulses of nerves and the response of the muscles.

How is Back Pain Treated?

The common goals of treatment are to relieve back pain and to restore mobility. Treatment varies depending on the severity and type of injury. The most common and basic treatment used for strains or minor injury is Rest. Heat can be used to promote circulation to the area and relieve spasms. Cold packs can be used to decrease the swelling in the affected area of the back. Common OTC (over the counter) medications such as Aspirin, Motrin, Tylenol, and Aleve are prescribed to help the pain and inflammation.

Long term bed rest is not usually recommended because it can make recovery slower and can ultimately cause other problems. Usually the doctor will have you gradually resume normal activities after 24-72 hours of rest. He may start you on a physical therapy program which should include heat, massage, ultrasound and an individualized exercise regimen. If the pain does not subside and it is interfering with your normal daily activities, your doctor may order prescription pain medications such as Darvocet, Vicodin, or Percocet and anti-inflammatory agents to relieve muscle spasm.

If your pain becomes chronic and all other treatments have failed, your doctor may refer you to a Back or Pain specialist. Because the back is a complex entity, specialists are more up to date on new advances in the treatment of back pain. Some treatments you might encounter are epidural nerve block (injection of anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, or steroid into the epidural space of the back for long term pain relief)and trigger point injections(injection of steroids and anesthetic into the muscle that is triggering pain.)This should also provide long term pain relief. Other medications such as antidepressants and anticonvulsants have been found to help relieve pain caused by nerve injuries.

Other types of treatment include:

Use of TENS(transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit. Electrodes are placed on 2-3 painful areas of the back and attached to a unit that provides mild electrical stimulus to the area in order to relieve pain.

Chiropractic adjustments of the back.

Acupressure or acupuncture treatments.

Relaxation and breathing techniques and stress management instruction.

Massage and basic stretching exercises to promote mobility and relieve spasm.

Yoga-and Pilates- This can help relieve pain and stress. Some Yoga postures may help relieve low back pain and help improve strength, flexibility and balance. Yoga is good for stress reduction and can help with the psychological aspects of pain.

Aquatic or water therapy- This can be very beneficial in relieving pain and improving mobility in those with chronic low back pain. There is no resistance to movement in the water, and water is soothing, comforting, and relaxing for the body.

How can Back Pain be Prevented?

Although some people say that you can’t avoid injuring your back, most doctors are in agreement that the common causes of back pain can be prevented by following a few lifestyle changes:

Exercise: You will need to consult your physician prior to starting an exercise program because there are some exercises, such as high impact aerobics and weight lifting that can make back pain worse. Other exercise, such as swimming, walking and biking can help overall health and strengthen the back. Nonetheless, exercise should not be avoided as it helps to improve overall health.

Lumbar support belts: Some people that work jobs that do heavy lifting on a daily basis are required to wear lumbar support and undergo back training on the job to learn how to prevent lifting injuries.

Do not wear high heels.

Keep head up and stomach in when standing. If standing for prolonged periods of time, place one foot up on a stool and alternate your weight frequently.

Sit in a chair with good lumbar support. Maintain good posture, sit up straight and keep both feet flat on the floor. Make a lumbar roll out of a rolled towel to place behind the low back when you drive or sit for prolonged periods of time.

Use proper body posture when lifting. Keep objects close to your body. Keep your back straight and your head up with stomach tucked in. Don’t lift objects that are too heavy. Get help when lifting awkward or heavy objects. Don’t bend forward to pick something up, rather bend at the knees and lift straight up from the knees.

In conclusion, back pain can be difficult to treat but there are many options out there for you. Specialists are finding new research every day. You can take care of your back by making good lifestyle changes and eliminating or reducing the amount of stress in your life. By maintaining good posture, using proper lifting techniques, and educating yourself on how to avoid back pain, you can prevent more back injury.

A Minnesota man has acknowledged using a false name and social security number to receive treatment at a South Dakota hospital.

U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson states 41-year-old Christopher David Curtis appeared before District Judge Karen Schreier Wednesday and pleaded guilty to an indictment charging him with social security fraud.

Prosecutors Curtis, of Cloquet, Minnesota, used a false name and social security number while receiving care at Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls in March and April of last year. He failed to pay the hospital for the treatments, which included a two-week in-patient stay. Avera McKennan states it is owed more than $130,000.

Curtis faces five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced in January. Restitution may also be ordered.

How to choose your business name When choosing your business name the key is to find a balance between the businesses personality (i.e. you) and the industry; it may be tempting to go overboard and inject too much personality into the name in an attempt to stand out from the competition, but in doing so you run the risk of alienating potential clients or attracting the wrong clientele. Take an objective view and consider the market your entering; look at your competitors names, you want a fresh name that will stand out from these competitors. A handy way of getting a one up on competitors is to choose a name that will enter at the start of the alphabet, so when some is searching through the directory listings they will come to you first; however, do not let this strategy rule your creative process as there are many other ways in which you can generate custom rather than via the yellow pages.

When choosing there are several considerations to bear in mind; the name you choose must be easily communicated on the phone, on the web, in literature, advertisements, uniforms and in your logo so avoid any extravagant and complicated names. Keeping it simple will make it easier for people to remember and will make it easier for translation should you go international. The function of your company is always a good starter point when generating ideas; if you are a hairdresser?s focus on the message you want to deliver and your competitor?s names; use a thesaurus for variation and inspiration. Often many company?s use the city in which they are based in the business name; although this is not a bad idea, if you choose to expand your company from a marketing point of view you want to portray the image that you are a big national company not a small start up from Skegness. However, this is entirely dependant on the image you wish to portray and the market you are entering.

If you’ve decided to form a limited company or limited liability partnership (LLP), you’ll need to register your name and other details with Companies House. Before registering make sure that your chosen name conforms to all the Companies House rules, and make sure that it is not already in use or does not resemble any trademarked names.
The Companies House rules dictate that you cannot use any words that suggest your business is of national importance or of special status; you are not allowed to use words that suggest you perform a specialised function or activity when you do not for example you cannot claim you are chartered if in fact you are not.

These minor rules are easy to abide by, the biggest challenge by far when choosing your business name is as aforementioned creating the right impression and standing out from the competition. This takes patience, creativity and objectivity; but get it right and it will make turning your business into a success a lot easier.

As we move into 2011, individuals and organizations will thinking about resolutions for the upcoming year. This year many companies will be looking into wellness programs for their workforce. With the rising cost of healthcare, fostering a healthy workforce becomes even more important. However, a wellness program goes far beyond reducing a company's healthcare costs. Encouraging a healthy workforce yields happier and more productive employees, increases overall morale, and leads to a more successful organization. It's no wonder these programs are popping up all over the United States in organizations both huge and small.

Following five key steps will help any company starting a wellness program to ensure success!

1. Get support from senior level management. Embracing a wellness initiative from the top down demonstrates to an organization that wellness is a corporate goal versus an HR initiative. Ongoing management support and participation encourages employee involvement in the initiative.

2. Create a core cross-functional team to invent programs and spearhead them throughout the company. By involving members at different levels of the organization and in different departments, a company can have suggests of the program to help motivate their peers to become involved.

3. Start Small. Make sure you program goals and initiatives are realistic. It is superior create a few successful initiatives to jumpstart your program than to try to take on more than your team can handle.

4. Set goals and evaluate often. Create a mission and goals for your wellness initiative. Revisit these monthly with your cross-functional team to make sure you stay on track and can make changes the program as necessary.

5. Promote it within your organization. Create signage in key areas of the company keeping employees updated in programs and upcoming events. Give out promotional products to employees to keep the program top of mind. There are many products out there to help promote a wellness program. Visit http://www.bestpromotions.com/products/browsecategory/369/ for creative ideas to help jump begin your wellness initiative.

As health care costs rise, the need for health insurance is a vital one for most Americans. Most have access to insurance plans through an employer or a retirement program but for those who don’t qualify for a plan, there is a solution: temporary health insurance.

Recent graduates, new hires who have not yet a probation period, part-time employees, early retirees, recently divorced individuals, unemployed individuals, and students who no longer qualify under a parents’ health coverage plan are just some of those who may seek temporary or short-term health insurance.

Unlike standard group coverage plans, temporary health insurance is often inexpensive and flexible. Most short term options range from one to twelve months, few are available for more than a year. Pre-existing conditions – a health condition previously diagnosed – can limit access to some temporary plans. Many services often require pre-certification before treatment is allowed. Although deductible amounts are often low with temp insurance, it’s wise to make sure that the deductible needs to be met one time only because some plans will require a deductible for each service. That could up the out-of-pocket expenses for medical treatments, even a office visit to your doctor. And, short term plans can vary from state-to-state so be aware of your state’s regulations and requirements.

Most short term plans do offer a greater flexibility than many standard health plans but with choice often comes lower coverage or payment for services. Depending on the options chosen, short term health insurance may or may not pay for surgery, blood work, x-ray, hospitilization, and other treatments. Know what is and is not covered.

If between jobs, maintaining your former group coverage can be an option. the 1984 Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reduction Act (COBRA) grants qualified employees to continue group coverage for a specific period. Such coverage may be better for your individual needs than temporary coverage so ask if you might be qualified.

These points are the most vital to think about when contemplating short-term, temporary health insurance:

1. Coverage is available in a broad range, from very basic to total coverage that includes catastrophic care

2. If willing to bank on good health, coverage for ONLY catastrophic medical care is available. I.e., such coverage be valid on an office visit for an illness but would cover a major accident or serious illness.

3. Short-term coverage is available for no less than thirty days but no more than 365 days or one year.

4. If you suffer from a pre-existing condition (including but not limited to high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, etc), you may be denied temporary health coverage.

5. Know the disadvantages of short-term health care coverage and remember that a ongoing plan is in the long run.

Be wise when considering short term health care coverage. Ask for quotes from more than one insurance company or agent. Consider your options and plan for the future, whether that includes a new job, marriage, or other life change that can affect insurance. Knowledge is the key to finding the temporary health care coverage you may need that will work for your individual needs.

If you go into your local hospital, you should be wary: visiting could be deadly, especially if you are a patient. You could possibly become one of the one out of every 20 hospital visitors in America who contracts a disease as a result or one of the 90,000 hospital visitors annually who contracts a disease that kills them.

In fact, according to the website, www.newsmatch.com, a hospital visit is one of the leading causes of death. Actually, hospital visits lead to more annual deaths than those caused by AIDS, vehicle accidents, and breast cancer. According to the website, the medical establishment does not want the public to know the dangers of hospital visits. Hospital visits, according to the website of the American Association for Retired People (AARP), www.aarp.or, are the eighth leading cause of death in America.

Dr. Russell Blaylock, a respected neurosurgeon, according to the newsmatch website, offered techniques for hospital visitors to protect themselves from catching a deadly disease during their visit. Dr. Blaylock a hospital visit represents numerous hazards.

According to Dr. Blaylock, the reason a visit to a local hospital can be deadly is that hospitals are a breeding ground for “countless infectious organisms” that can make one sick. Some can even be deadly.

According to the website, Dr. Blaylock does not always express an opinion that is welcomed by most in the medical community. The doctor, according to the website, however, is nationally recognized, a board-certified neurosurgeon, a health practitioner, and an author and lecturer. He has 26 years of experience in neurosurgery and is editor of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons and Journal of the American Nutriceutical Association. His other experience includes serving previously as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He is currently a visiting professor of Biology at the Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi. He receives no funding from the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr. Blaylock says there are a variety of steps Americans can take to protect themselves during their hospital stay. His report is available to obtain online. It reveals many things including what to eat before and during a hospital stay and how to avoid the two most common and deadly hospital-acquired infections.

According to the AARP website, hospitals are working harder to stop infections. The problem is bugs are increasingly resistant to antibiotics. A total of 20 million people get a hospital-acquired infection annually. In 2005 19,000 people received an infection alone, compared to 11,600 the previous year. To top it off, 13 percent of the people who received the infections in Pennsylvania died, compared to only 2 percent of those who did not receive an infection.

According to the AARP website, a New Hampshire resident, who was operated on so cancer could be removed from a lung, died. The death was not from the disease but because of a germ she contracted in the hospital. Her daughters then appeared before the legislature and became a part of the nationwide movement against infections in hospitals that can be deadly.

Betsy McCaughey, the former Lieutenant Governor of New York, is a leader in the movement. The former Lieutenant Governor founded a nonprofit committee, the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths, after a man who was mugged but survived brain trauma, obtained an infection in a hospital and died.

McCaughey simple steps could be taken to prevent the spread of deadly infections in local hospitals, like telling patients to shower with chlorhexidine soap if they will have surgery. Such soap can be obtained in a drugstore.

McCaughey hospitals are content if they have only one wound for every 24 surgical patients. She stated if the hospitals were more careful, that one wound would not be necessary. A full 25% of those wound cases require a catheter for a week or more.

According to the AARP website, if hospitals were more diligent to always give patients antibiotics before surgery, avoid the overuse of catheters and intravenous lines, and see their health care workers always wash their hands, infections would be cut dramatically.

McCaughey points out that bacteria are spread “through touch.” She added that at one time, doctors were trained not to touch “doorknobs, cabinets, curtains, and blood pressure cuffs,” once they had scrubbed and were wearing gloves. She that now a “liberal use of antibiotics” has replaced attention to “rigorous hygiene.” She added the trend started in the 1970′s.

In 1974 only two percent of staph germs were drug-resistant, but now 63 percent are.

Some hospitals are working hard to solve the problem. Some hospital workers are being trained to wash their hands. They are being trained to more closely monitor incision sites and to raise beds at least 30 degrees, to prevent fluid from going into lungs. In one city with such training, Cambridge, Massachusetts, there have been no cases of someone contracting an infection at a local hospital for a year.

While Pennyslvania and California are two that have been leading the way on working to solve the problem of deadly infections in hospitals, 14 have passed laws requiring hospitals to report information on infections to the public.

Pittsburgh’s Alleghany Hospital has saved $1.2 million over two years by reducing the rate of infections from large-vein catheters by 90 percent and ventilator pneumonias by 85 percent.

Deadly infections in hospitals have been a major problem in America. There are many hospitals and others working to overcome the problem. It never hurts to be educated, however, if you are going to be a patient, or are going to visit a hospital patient.
